20 years of the
Global Geoparks Network

The Global Geopark Network (GGN) is celebrating a major anniversary in 2024: 20 years ago, in February 2004, 17 European and 8 Chinese geoparks founded an international network at UNESCO headquarters in Paris to strengthen exchange and cooperation between geoparks.

The Bergstrasse-Odenwald Geo-Nature Park, which became a European Geopark in 2002, was one of the German founding members of the new association and also worked intensively on the development of the association in the following years.

In 2015, UNESCO created a new program within the UNESCO family with the “International Geoscience and Geopark Program” and the “UNESCO Global Geopark ” award, which is currently brought to life by the Global Geoparks Network with 213 geopark regions in 48 countries worldwide.

At the same time, the exchange and global cooperation between geoparks is an elementary contribution to securing the future with regard to the sustainable use of our planet. As model regions for the 2030 Agenda, the UNESCO Global Geoparks are making valuable contributions to this with their projects.
